The Talk: John Derbyshire Stirs the Pot

April 9, 2012

John Derbyshire

John Derbyshire, lately of the National Review, but recently dismissed from that magazine, has penned a piece titled “The Talk-Non-Black Version”. “The Talk”, as you probably know, is the obligatory cautionary remarks certain black parents make to their teenagers about the dangers of the white world. Derbyshire has submitted his version of cautionary words to be directed to whites.

John Derbyshire’s piece for Taki Magazine  the other day (April 5) has caused a firestorm of criticism and controversy. It even resulted in Mr. D’s dismissal as a contributor to National Review. He discusses “The Talk” which conversation is considered obligatory to certain parents of black teenagers. Derbyshire however offers an alternative; “The Talk: Non-Black Version”.

National Review editor Rich Lowry said the piece is ” maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative… is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation…”  and would never have been published in his magazine. However, a careful reading of Derbyshire’s observations and caveats yields no small amount of useful information and it cannot, I believe, be characterized as racist as many, not including Rich Lowry, are claiming. Politically incorrect to be sure, but not racist. Here is one of opinions that  what Derbyshire has written indeed racist; from Mark Adomanis writing at Forbes (April 9):

“…what made Derbyshire’s piece so unusual, and what resulted in his summary dismissal, was not the fact that it dealt with race but that it did so in a uniquely bullheaded and crass way: it wasn’t a racist dog whistle so much as it was an out-of-tune racist marching band.”

Here is the article in its entirety: Link to Taki’s Magazine

Taki's Magazine

There is much talk about “the talk.”

“Sean O’Reilly was 16 when his mother gave him the talk that most black parents give their teenage sons,” Denisa R. Superville of the Hackensack (NJ) Record tells us. Meanwhile, down in Atlanta: “Her sons were 12 and 8 when Marlyn Tillman realized it was time for her to have the talk,” Gracie Bonds Staples writes in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Leonard Greene talks about the talk in the New York Post. Someone bylined as KJ Dell’Antonia talks about the talk in The New York TimesDarryl Owens talks about the talk in the Orlando Sentinel.

Yes, talk about the talk is all over.

There is a talk that nonblack Americans have with their kids, too. My own kids, now 19 and 16, have had it in bits and pieces as subtopics have arisen. If I were to assemble it into a single talk, it would look something like the following. (to read more see page 2 link below)

The Oath to Defend the U.S. Constitution….

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world….

In commemoration of “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World” (April 19, 1775) The Committees of Safety and The Oath Keepers rallied yesterday on the Lexington (MA) Battle Green. On April 19, 1775 the Minutemen and British regulars met here in a brief battle signaling the opening of hostilities between the American colonies and Great Britain. Early this morning the annual reenactment of the event took place on The Lexington Battle Green; yesterday the patriots and red coats skirmished at Concord’s North Bridge.

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Amendment II, U.S. Constitution)

The Committees of Safety presented written remarks by the constitutional scholar Dr. Edwin Vieira who has described himself as “one of the very few people… vociferously advocating revitalization of “the Militia of the several States” along strict constitutional lines”. Dr. Vieira was unable to attend and his speech was read by Tom Moon. The present day Committees of Safety is a national organization founded by Walter Reddy. The group consists of citizens

“who exercise their constitutional rights of association, speech, and petition through non-partisan, non-violent, public education and legislation and legislative activism for the purpose of restoring a “constitutional system of security and defense” in their own States what the Constitution declares as “necessary to the security of a free State” throughout the United States….(and further)…one State at a time, restoring the system of community defense crucial to a “Republican Form of Government” in each State through the efforts of the people themselves – true “government of the People, by the People, and for the People.”

Go here for history of the original Committees of Safety during colonial times. Founder Reddy spoke briefly before introducing the Patriot Pastor, Garrett Lear.

The Oath Keepers portion of the program was initiated by the group’s founder Stewart Rhodes. At his blog Dirt Rhodes Scholar, Rhodes says this about himself:

“Blog of E. Stewart Rhodes, ex-paratrooper, disabled vet, ex-firearms instructor, former Ron Paul staff member, Yale Law grad/Research Scholar, & Montana/Nevada lawyer. Stewart has written for Gerry Spence’s The Warrior, for moreliberty.org, writes the Enemy at the Gate column for S.W.A.T. Magazine, and is writing a book on the dangers of applying the laws of war to the American people in the “war on terror.” Stewart is NOT a liberal, unless you want to consider him a classical liberal.”

Stewart Rhodes spoke at some length about the obligation of our military members and peace officers not to obey unlawful orders. Rhodes Audio Clip 1 (2:13) Next he read an address by General Washington to his troops just before the Battle of Long Island. Rhodes Audio Clip 2 (3:41) Rhodes then read out and explained the orders the Oath Keepers will not obey. (see video that follows)

Next the audience of around 200 persons heard a spirited speech from Sheriff Richard Mack whose website says: I’m Richard Mack, former sheriff of Graham County, Arizona, and long-time crusader for freedom and individual rights. Right now,

..it is vital that we restore the Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our own federal government. If America is conquered or ruined it will be from within, not a foreign enemy.

Sheriff Mack spoke passionately about peace officers’ personal moral obligation to keep their oath of office, to defend the U.S. Constitution. Mack has written several books, the latest being “The County Sheriff-America’s Last Hope”. Do take the time to listen to his speech; it’s a little over 16 minutes.

Sheriff Rchard Mack (Audio-16:37)

Note especially the part where Sheriff Mack talks about Rosa Parks of Montgomery Alabama and the audience response to his humanitarian tone. Patriotic conservatives are nothing like the evil imaginings of the moronic Janeane Garofolo (audio: 02:32) recently heard on MSNBC where she described the Tea Party participants as racists and white power freaks who hate the Black president. For an answer to Garofolo see Michelle Malkin on Katrina Pierson who says “We are a Free People….We will resist socialism…We as the people have the right and the duty to protect our  Constitution and our sovereignty from any person or government that threatens it…”

The finale to the program was the reaffirming of their oaths by those present, and for those who had never been sworn there was the opportunity to take the oath then and there. Set out below is the Oath to Defend the Constitution with audio of the swearing in.

I (name) do solemnly swear, or affirm, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; pledging my life, my fortune and my sacred honor, so help me God.

Oath to Defend the Constitution (Audio-3:43)

The program ends with as the assembly sings “My Country ’tis of Thee; Sweet Land of Liberty; of Thee I Sing Let Freedom Ring (2:09)

Bush Chimp v Obama Chimp: Chimp News Update

February 22, 2009

There was a a lot of comment on our earlier postings: Bush Chimp vs Obama Chimp and Chimp Story Has Legs…. The recent horrific chimp attack in Connecticut and the chimp cartoon in the NY Post prompted a flurry of new postings across the blogosphere. A sampling, some serious and some humorous follows (not always sure which is supposed to be funny and which is not):

President Please! “N…..” Word Now Obsolete

February 19, 2009

In a wave of revisionism sweeping the nation the “N” word is now obsolete and has been replaced by “President”. This video explains:

The revisionism has required the alternation of the famous Chris Rock skit, “Nigga Please Cereal” (original video below)

FLOTUS POTUS – HOCUS POCUS

January 26, 2009

POTUS FLOTUS OPE NOPE:

HOCUS POCUS KWANZAA BAA!

Guess what folks! We are now having to deal with the latest inane acronym: FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States). POTUS was bad enough, although I confess to having used that one a lot for convenience. Then came the made-up Office of the President Elect (OPE), this should actually reflect that there is not such office (NOPE). This was followed shortly thereafter by the made-up holiday (KWANZAA).

FLOTUS, hardly a flattering term, came to my attention by way of a posting by The Politico’s Nia-Malika Henderson today reporting the displeasure being expressed by certain fashion designers of color that FLOTUS was not wearing their precious designs. The Black Artist’s Association (BAA) has notified FLOTUS of their pique in a letter to the FLOTUS office. BAA Cofounder Amnau Eele told Women’s Wear Daily (WWD):

It’s fine and good if you want to be all ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘We Are the World’ by representing all different countries. But if you are going to have Isabel Toledo do the inauguration dress, and Jason Wu do the evening gown, why not have Kevan Hall, B Michael, Stephen Burrows or any of the other black designers”

Court Won’t Hear Donofrio v Wells….

December 8, 2008

This just in from Yahoo News via Drudge…

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.

The court did not comment on its order Monday rejecting the call by Leo Donofrio of East Brunswick, N.J., to intervene in the presidential election. Donofrio says that since Obama had dual nationality at birth — his mother was American and his Kenyan father at the time was a British subject — he cannot possibly be a “natural born citizen,” one of the requirements the Constitution lists for eligibility to be president.

Donofrio also contends that two other candidates, Republican John McCain and Socialist Workers candidate Roger Calero, also are not natural-born citizens and thus ineligible to be president.

At least one other appeal over Obama’s citizenship remains at the court. Philip J. Berg of Lafayette Hill, Pa., argues that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii as Obama says and the Hawaii secretary of state has confirmed. Berg says Obama also may be a citizen of Indonesia, where he lived as a boy. Federal courts in Pennsylvania have dismissed Berg’s lawsuit.

Socialist = Black: Latest Left Lunacy!

October 22, 2008

The good old English word Socialist has become the latest code word for Black and is now a designated smear according to at least one dunce on the Left. Dunce Lewis Duiguid, a Kansas City Star columnist has come up with the idea that when Republicans speak of Obama’s socialist agenda they want the listener to decode that word as black. He writes:

The “socialist” label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots…..McCain and Palin have simply reached back in history to use an old code word for black. It set whites apart from those deemed unAmerican and those who could not be trusted during the communism scare.

The funniest, and most intelligent, part of the affair is the comments from the paper’s readers, to wit:

….I had a good chuckle at what can only be a called a Freshman College Student’s failed attempt at linking his argument to the facts in this article. There are virtually no White Americans that associate Blacks as a race as being Socialist. Code Word? Indeed!….Obama IS a Socialist. Obama isn’t Black he’s a Mulatto. IF he gets elected you will have to say there’s a Half White Man in the White House! That must drive you crazy because that will leave Bill Clinton as the First Black President! (As Proclaimed by your own beloved NAACP!)…. and

….In point of fact, A. Phillip Randolph was a labor union organizer, with more than a few socialist leanings. Paul Robeson was an avowed Marxist, a celebrated member of the American Communist Party, and a winner of the Lenin Peace Prize. W.E.B. Dubois was a known Trotskyite and Maoist, ran for office as a member of the American Labor Party, and also won the Lenin Peace Prize. He once wrote, “Joseph Stalin was a great man; few other men of the 20th century approach his stature.” Dr. Martin Luther King was never an official member of the Socialist party, but several of his advisers were (Hunter Pitts, Stanley Levinson). Dr. King founded the “Poor People’s Campaign,” an attempt to “spread the wealth around,” as Sen. Barak Obama would say.

M. Rizzuto over at ConservativePunk remarks:

This most laughable aspect of this charge, is that author Lewis Diuguid expects us to believe that something like J. Edgar Hoover’s use of the word socialist to describe blacks is somehow fresh in the minds of Americans, leading it to be the natural connection we make when we hear the word. Not to mention that W.E.B. Du Bois was in fact a socialist.

Nader: Obama Trying to “Talk White”

June 26, 2008

“There’s only one thing different about Barack Obama when it comes to being a Democratic presidential candidate. He’s half African-American,” Nader said. “Whether that will make any difference, I don’t know. I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We’ll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards.”

Obviously Nader is referring to the Obama campaign strategy and not BHO’s manner of speaking which is in the best tradition of English locution and oratory.

See Booker Rising (black perspective) blog for additional responses to Nader’s foolishness:

…in Mr. Nader’s mind black = poor. Never mind that 74% of black Americans are not poor…and most black Americans haven’t been poor since the 1960s. Perhaps Mr. Nader hasn’t heard Sen. Obama talk about these issues, because Sen. Obama is aware of the social class diversity and progress in Black America. Last night, I was discussing this very topic with a black liberal guy from Denver who was visiting Chicago. Although we are ideologically different, we both agreed that Mr. Nader was out of order on this one.

See Hot Air (white perspective) where Ed Morrissey berates Nader:

Talk white”? Do people still think this way? Apparently Nader does, and the arrogance here is simply stunning. On what basis does Ralph Nader think that he qualifies to be the arbiter of black authenticity? Nader doesn’t even bother to go for subtlety or code words here. He doesn’t actually utter the words “Uncle Tom” in this outburst, but the meaning is plain. Nader accuses Obama of selling out the poor and his own constituency in order to ingratiate himself with the “white

Now That Hillary’s Gone (Or Is She?)

June 5, 2008

From James Taranto’s “Best of the Web Today”, a Wall Street Jouranal opinion piece:

Is She Really Out?
We got a campaign email today from Hillary Clinton in the wee hours this morning that almost reads like a concession:

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party’s nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.

An extremely close reading of that last sentence, though, leads one to wonder. “If he were the Democratic Party’s nominee,” she writes. This is the subjunctive mood (sic), which implies a counterfactual assumption. It’s possible, though, that we’re reading this too closely…

On a related note about a possible Obama-Clinton ticket we have this from Jimmy Carter (Fox News):

Jimmy Carter urged Barack Obama not to pick Hillary Clinton as his running mate in an interview with a British publication, saying such a pairing “would be the worst mistake that could be made….The former Democratic president, who announced his support for Obama as the Illinois senator clinched his party’s nomination Tuesday night, told the Guardian’s Weekend magazine that Obama and Clinton together “would just accumulate the negative aspects of both candidates…..In a bluntly worded assessment, Carter defended his stance by citing Clinton’s negative ratings and the many questions and biases Obama faces….If you take that 50 percent who just don’t want to vote for Clinton and add it to whatever element there might be who don’t think Obama is white enough or old enough or experienced enough or because he’s got a middle name that sounds Arab, you could have the worst of both worlds,” he said. (emphasis added)

As to the question about an “Arab sounding” name we note the lead from an article in todays “Le Monde”:

Le candidat du Parti démocrate à la présidence des Etats-Unis, le 4 novembre, sera donc Barack Hussein Obama, 46 ans, fils d’une Américaine et d’un Kényan, né à Hawaï, élevé en partie en Indonésie, étudiant à l’université Harvard, travailleur social dans le ghetto noir de Chicago, entré au Sénat, à Washington, il y a trois ans et demi.

Hell, why not just put Michelle Obama on the ticket; you could call it impeachment insurance! After all Hillary was virtual V.P. all those years.
